Piano Studio FAQs

What is Music Theory?

Simply put, Music Theory is learning to read music.  In the beginning, it involves learning the symbols for the notes and rhythms and then progresses to examine how those notes are put together to form music: chords, scales, progressions.  A good understanding of music theory not only allows one to read music, but learn it faster and with more enjoyment.  Music theory is ESSENTIAL for anyone who wants to compose music.

How often should I take lessons?

In the old days, students would take lessons daily with their instructors.  For almost all of us today, that is just not possible.  Instruction once a week with practice every day is generally the norm so that good habits can be reinforced.

Do you teach children?

Yes.  I teach basic, beginning piano; usually students who have never touched a keyboard.  Some parents are eager to have their children begin learning at extremely young ages, hoping to give them a head start toward their 10,000 hours (the amount of time it takes to become an expert at a skill).  For parents interested in enrolling any child younger than 5, I would recommend a teacher who specializes in Suzuki method.

After a student has learned the basics of piano from me, I will suggest that they then continue with a teacher who specializes in piano.

Is piano a good first instrument?

Beginning piano is an excellent place to start a young musician.  There are many reasons why this is so.  First, the piano is “ready to go”.  Parents won’t have to endure screeches and pops from a young trumpeter or violinist: a student will be able to press a key and make a pleasing sound right from the start.  Second, the piano is an all-in-one instrument.  A piano can make music all by itself, as opposed to an oboe or flute which usually needs to play with many other instruments.  Third, the piano is a chord sounding instrument which allows a student to learn about the way harmony is put together.

How long does it take to learn piano?

While you might not be playing Chopin in the first year, one can learn to play simple songs almost from the start.  Gradually those songs will become more and more challenging and “impressive” based on your practice own habits and learning pace.  Pianists who are serious about their art study all their lives.

Will I have to only play classical music or can you teach me to play jazz?

I teach basic beginning piano, which focuses more on familiarizing yourself with the instrument and learning to read music.  Once you gain those skills, it will be time for you to “leave the nest” and study with a teacher who specializes in jazz piano.

How much do you charge?

Lessons are $20 per half hour, $35 per hour.
